Brave Rail Employee Suffers Critical Wounds During Multiple Knife Incident on Express Service

A courageous railway staff member who intervened to save passengers during a mass stabbing attack on a express train has suffered critical injuries, police stated on Sunday.

Details of the Frightening Event

Surveillance footage reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to stop the assailant as the train journeyed between Peterborough and another station in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers fleeing through carriages.

The suspect, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Police declared a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Emergency Response and Consequences

The event on the weekend resulted in 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unscheduled stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several people have since been discharged from medical care.

A witness filmed the individual waving a big knife and being subdued with a Taser as he confronted officers on the platform. He was allegedly heard yelling, "Kill me, end my life."

“This awful event has created broad consequences. We are thinking of the victims and their families – particularly the courageous member of rail staff whose family are being assisted by trained officers,” said a high-ranking police official.

Labor Response and Calls for Measures

Rail associations were swift to commend staff and demand more action. A labor official stated he would be “requesting urgent meetings with government, rail employers and law enforcement to ensure that we have the strongest available assistance, resources and robust protocols in place”.

A different association representative urged the train operator and authorities “to act swiftly to examine security, to help the impacted workers, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.

Operator Commended for Quick Thinking

The train driver who halted the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by union representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“The driver did not halt the train in the middle of two stops where it’s obviously difficult for the first responders to reach, but he continued going until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost already there,” stated a association representative.

Further Details

Police stated they received the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the service was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness recounted at first wondering if the situation was a Halloween joke, but quickly realized from people's expressions that it was serious.

Police have confirmed there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terror-related attack and have asked the community to provide with any further details.

Rail operations on the impacted line are expected to have disruption until the following day, with passengers advised to defer their travel where possible.
