Ex- FBI director James Comey has pleaded not guilty to providing misleading information to congressional representatives and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Mr Comey's legal representative entered the response on his behalf in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would attempt to have the proceedings dismissed for multiple causes including that his client, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

James Comey was charged shortly after Donald Trump urged his top legal official to take action against him.

Court Developments

In court on mid-week, his attorney the legal representative advised the court they planned to submit several motions to terminate the case before a court case, arguing the legal action was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully appointed to assume control of the proceedings.

The former director's proceedings was originally overseen by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his probe into a different political adversary - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Legal Setting

The former director appeared in positive mood as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was joined by his partner, Mrs Failor and daughter his daughter, a US lawyer who the former government recently fired.

Following the reading to the court read his legal protections and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, the defendant was questioned if he grasped the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he told the proceedings.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013 to 2017 and was dismissed about a few months into Donald Trump's first term as national leader. At the period, Mr Comey was directing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any links between Russia and the presidential campaign.

Throughout his leadership, James Comey sparked a counter-response from Democrats when he announced just days before the national vote that he was investigating Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a personal email system. Charges against Clinton were not filed, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert the former director lied to the legislature during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he misled the legislative body by stating he had not approved an individual at the FBI to disclose to media organizations data about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also charge James Comey of "improperly attempting to affect, obstruct and impede" the legislative group by making false statements to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media James Comey posted to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was innocent and charged Trump of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are costs to opposing the former president," he commented. "We will not live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

The accusations against James Comey emerged after Trump posted on online platforms insisting on his attorney general, Pam Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and other people.
