Tetris Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
