Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
