World Health Organization Faces Major Workforce Reduction After US Financial Withdrawal
This international health organization has announced intentions to cut its workforce by nearly a quarter – totaling over 2,000 positions – by the middle of 2026.
Financial Crisis Triggers Major Reorganization
This decision follows following the US, formerly the organization's biggest contributor, pulled out funding earlier this period.
The US government was responsible for approximately 18% of the agency's total funding, creating a substantial budgetary shortfall.
Projected Workforce Cuts
Based on internal estimates, the workforce will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in January 2025 to approximately 7,030 by mid-2026.
This reduction of 2,371 posts includes job cuts, retirements, and regular departures.
"The past year was one of the most difficult in our history, while we have navigated a challenging but essential process of prioritisation and restructuring," commented the agency's director-general.
Financial Gap Remains
The Geneva-based body currently faces a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, representing almost a quarter of its required funding.
This figure represents an reduction from a previous estimated shortfall of $1.7bn noted in May.
Not Included Finances
The financial calculations do not include a further 1.1 billion dollars in expected contributions from current negotiations with various donors.
A representative for the organization stated that the current unsecured part of the biennial budget is in fact lower than in previous periods, crediting this to multiple reasons:
- A smaller overall budget size
- The launch of a fresh donor outreach campaign
- Higher in participating countries' mandatory contributions
The restructuring process is currently approaching its end, allowing the organization to progress with a reshaped structure.
